LED is an acronym for “Light Emitting Diode”. These are very small semiconductors and are a computer chip encased in a glass-like resin, which emits therapeutic wavelengths (or colours) of light energy when a current is passed through them. Unlike laser, LED Phototherapy is non-invasive and non-thermal, and hence requires no recovery time after treatments.
LED Phototherapy was originally developed to fast-track the healing of wounds and post surgery scars. The rejuvenation of healthy skin was also observed which turns out to be a happy coincidence for those seeking help with their skin conditions, as well as those seeking repair and rejuvenation of skins suffering acne, rosacea and sun damage.
LED Phototherapy, also known as LED Photobiomodulation, is making a name for itself on the beauty scene at the moment. What is LED Phototherapy?
So, we’ve all been told exposure to light is supposed to be bad for our skin right? Well, that isn’t necessarily always true. UVA and UVB are very damaging to our skin, however with the right amount of red, blue, and near infrared light our skin can become re-energised. It helps us produce vitamin D and provides energy and serotonin and can also accelerate our skin’s natural repair processes.
LED Phototherapy DOES NOT deliver UVA, UVB, UVC or radioactive light (like an x-ray).
- UVA light is in the range; 400nm – 320nm;
- UVB light 320nm – 290nm;
- UVC light 290nm – 100nm and
- X-rays are 1nm.
- LED is delivered in the visible light spectrum range of between 420nm to 750nm (nanometres) and Near Infrared LED is delivered just above the visible light range at 830nm – wavelengths above UVA, UVB, UVC and X-rays.
LED technology uses wavelengths from the visible light spectrum as well as near infrared, however they do not contain harmful ultraviolet wavelengths and therefore cannot damage skin tissue.
In the 1960’s, LED lights were essentially used only for bedside alarm clocks and camera battery alert lights when they were first mass-produced, because a combination of low energy and the fact that they could only emit red, green, or yellow light restricted their usability.
Fast forward to the 1990’s, and Prof Harry Whelan and his group at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Space Medicine Laboratory began experiments with LED’s that had less divergence, much higher and more stable output powers, and quasimonochromaticity, whereby nearly all of the photons produced by the LED were at a specifically rated wavelength. The outcome, they noticed an increase in plant growth under a certain wavelength of light. So, if it worked for plant growth, could it also work for skin and cells?
NASA then began experimenting with the same rated LED’s to speed the healing of wounds, because in zero-gravity situations wounds don’t quite heal as fast as they would otherwise. Test results were again positive, and research continued and developed into skin cancer treatment and cosmetic arenas.
LED Phototherapy is based on the principle that living cells are able to absorb and be influenced by light. The treatment has long been recognised for its regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses LED light bulbs to emits wavelengths of light energy, that targets deep into the skin cells for multiple skin and anti-ageing benefits. It is painless and relaxing and is cost effective with amazing results, safe for all skin types and colours.
LED Phototherapy is a skin treatment which exposes the skin cells to low levels of these light energies. The re-energisation of the cells allow for faster cell regeneration, giving a younger healthier look to any skin. Think of it like a plant going through photosynthesis; energy is gathered from these light sources to help the cell reproduction and repair in the most natural way. This process is known as photobiomodulation.
What does this mean on a cellular level? Well the mitochondria is responsible for the vast majority of ATP (Adenosine Tri-phosphate – known as the “energy currency of life”) production in our cells, however if the cell is damaged through injury or trauma, its production levels of ATP significantly decrease. Scientists have discovered that cells exposed to the right frequencies of infra-red light cause a resurgence in the mitochondria’s production of ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) which then link with free oxygen singlets in our cells to get that vital ATP back to work on repairing the skin.
LED treatments are particularly good for acne, rosacea, pigmentation, and building skin density, especially when done in a series. Each treatment is specifically calculated for your individual needs. We use DermaFrac serum infusion post micro skin needling, and recommend this treatment be added to compliment any LED treatment.

415 nm (BLUE light)
Blue LED Light when applied at 415nm destroys the bacteria which causes acne and helps in the prevention of breakouts. Exposure of the Blue light at 415nm to the p.acnes bacteria is toxic and kills that bacteria immediately. It also helps to balance sebum production and improve skin clarity. Applied in combination with Red and Near Infrared light, the combined treatment offers enhanced anti-blemish results and is excellent as a post-treatment procedure to help minimise breakouts and reduce redness. Also proven to help with low serotonin levels and for those suffering forms of anxiety or depression. They call this the “happy light” in the Medical Field.

LED technology uses wavelengths from the visible light spectrum as well as near infrared, however they do not contain harmful ultraviolet wavelengths and therefore cannot damage skin tissue.
The differences between the positive and negative effects of light are the amount, and the parts of the light spectrum we are exposed to. Ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging but controlled levels of 830nm Near Infrared, 633nm Red, and 415nm Blue light are clinically proven to be beneficial.
LED Phototherapy should not be confused with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or laser, both of which use pulsed light and are designed to damage or destroy certain cells. LED Phototherapy is non-invasive and non-thermal, involves the use of continuous light rather than pulses of light, does not destroy cells or skin and therefore requires no recovery time after treatments.
LED Phototherapy should also not be confused with Photodynamic Therapy. Although both use LED light on the skin, Photodynamic Therapy requires pre-treatment of the skin with aminolevulenic acid (ALA) and this significantly changes the light reaction in the skin to produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells, and is used specifically for the treatment of cancers. Photodynamic therapy is a treatment performed specifically by trained medical personnel.

Based on published data, LED Phototherapy is proving to have more and more viable applications in many fields of medicine. However, it must always be remembered that not any old LED device will do. In order to be effective, LED Phototherapy must operate with controlled delivery.
- If the wavelength does not match the target cell then there will be no absorption and therefore no reaction and no result.
- If the photon intensity is too low, again there will be no reaction and no result.
- If the power density is too low, then most likely there will be no reaction and no result.

What is involved in LED Phototherapy treatments?
All treatments commence with a FREE Skin Analysis and Consultation with our Skin Specialist to determine any medical history that can affect the application or outcome of treatments. Our Skin Specialist may suggest you start a session with a microdermabrasion procedure to remove dead skin cells for more effective light penetration dependent upon your skin condition.
From the results of your consultation and skin analysis, the appropriate and most beneficial settings of LED Phototherapy will be selected and programmed into the LED System.
Depending on the condition you are seeking to have LED treatment for, our Skin Specialist may recommend the application of a specific serum that will aid your skin treatment and will benefit in transdermally transferring to your skin via the LED Phototherapy Treatment session.
The LED session is administered from a special multi LED light panel that is positioned over the treatment area. The LED System we use is the XEN LED – a medical grade Australia TGA approved device with state of the art chip on board technology delivering controlled wavelength output, photon intensity and density to achieve optimal rejuvenation and healing outcomes.
For a session addressing a facial area you will be supplied with a pair of eye goggles that are merely to soften the bright light from the LED panel onto the eyelids making the treatment more comfortable. Having said that, for the first 30 seconds of a LED facial treatment, the light can be a little disconcerting, but you will soon relax to the light and may often find yourself dozing off or feeling like you are on a beach somewhere enjoying the gentle warmth of the sun.
The treatment time will be from 15 mins to 30 mins as decided by our Skin Specialist.
Depending on one’s age, skin tone, diet and lifestyle, following a single LED Phototherapy treatment, clients can expect immediate improvement in skin tone, hydration and overall radiance which will continue in the following days. Redness and irritation are calmed. However, most changes occur naturally over a course of treatments.
The number of treatments required for optimum results is subject to a number of factors including indication, lifestyle factors and other procedures that may be included in the overall treatment programme. This will be assessed during the consultation.
Results with LED Phototherapy are cumulative, and a course of treatments taken in close succession is recommended for optimum results. Results can last for several months and occasional maintenance treatments offer lasting improvement in the appearance and health of the skin.
In general, LED Phototherapy Treatments are an addition to other treatment courses such as IPL Photorejuvenation or dermal needling, to stimulate and enhance skin recovery and escalate skin repair periods and results.

First developed by NASA, that same organisation have recently conducted studies on the use of red LED light for the enhancement of cell growth and found that the application of specific wavelengths of light increased fibroblast activity and enhanced DNA synthesis leading to the production of new collagen.
- A follow up study by Wisconsin Medical College demonstrated that the specific wavelengths of red LED light could be used to accelerate wound healing.
- The American Academy of Dermatology has reported that blue LED light can be used to destroy the bacteria that produces the inflammation associated with propionbacterium acnes.
