Rejuvenate your skin and visibly reduce skin imperfections
Reverse the effects of sun damage, age spots & more

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photorejuvenation – also known as IPL Skin Rejuvenation, IPL Laser Photofacial or IPL Foto Facial – is a state of the art technology that with a trained and skilled skin therapist can deliver world-class results.

Constant exposure to the sun can damage the skin and cause common skin imperfections such as redness, freckles, age spots and uneven skin texture.

IPL Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment performed with medical-grade Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. It is designed to target skin conditions, including pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin, dilated capillaries, redness, and rosacea. The process works by using accurately targeted light energy to safely treat visible blood vessels or pigmentation.

Photorejuvenation treatments stimulate the body’s natural healing process to assist in the removal of treated pigmentation and vessels, whilst also promoting the natural production of collagen, which leaves skin smoother and more evenly toned, firms the skin and reduces skin pore size, and results in a more youthful looking skin.

Treatments have proven to generate substantial visible improvements in the skin without significant downtime. The Intense Pulsed Light used to perform Photorejuvenation is attracted to dark melanin and haemoglobin causing a coagulation and destruction of targeted lesions.

At Nascent Skin & Beauty Clinic IPL Skin Photorejuvenation is a fresh start for your skin. Our IPL skin rejuvenation services strategically address a number of the most common skin concerns with just a handful of treatments.

IPL Photorejuvenation – Repair, Resurface, Rejuvenate

The IPL process works by using accurately targeted light energy to safely treat abnormal blood vessels or pigmentation. The laser pigmentation removal stimulates the body’s natural healing process to assist in healing the condition, while also promoting the natural production of collagen, which leaves skin smoother and more evenly toned. Treatments have proven to generate substantial visible improvements in the skin without any recovery downtime.

With the innovative IPL Photorejuvenation treatment, you can gently reverse the signs of sun damage without surgery or needles.

A clear complexion is something many people want, but even with the most meticulous skincare regimen, blemish-free skin can be difficult to achieve.

IPL Photorejuvenation, when done properly, almost always consists of a series of 4 – 8 treatments, usually one every three to six weeks. The benefits of IPL Photorejuvenation treatments are achieved with little discomfort and minimal risk.

For all IPL treatments – exposure to the sun for long periods (10+ mins constant), for a total of four (4) weeks before and four (4) weeks after any IPL treatment must be avoided
If you are routinely frustrated by any of the following skin problems, IPL Photorejuvenation treatments can be a good choice;-
  • Acne (Acne Vulgaris)
  • Age or sun spots
  • Broken capillaries
  • Combination Skin Type
  • Dry Dehydrated Skin
  • Excessive flushing – redness
  • Enlarged visible pores
  • Fine Lines

With IPL Photorejuvenation you can say goodbye to many of today’s more common skin disorders and achieve some anti-aging benefits at the same time.

What is IPL?

“IPL” is an acronym for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL is a United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) – approved and patented form of treatment which has been shown to be both safe and effective.

Having stated that the treatment is approved, this does not mean the IPL machine your therapist is using has been approved by either or both of these agencies, nor does it mean your therapist is qualified and experienced to use IPL or Laser.

We strongly advise you to ask appropriate questions and sight the qualification documents of your therapist before proceeding with any IPL or Laser treatments.

At Nascent Skin & Beauty Clinic we use medical grade TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) Australia approved IPL technology.

Our Skin Specialist is both graduate & industry qualified, with extensive experience in dermal applications involving IPL and Laser.

Your safety when undertaking IPL or Laser procedures, as well as the efficacy of treatments you are receiving is ensured

Because IPL Photorejuvenation is a relatively simple and straightforward procedure, with few concerns in terms of either side effects, recovery time, or the level of invasiveness with the treatment itself, IPL is continuing to become a more widely utilised choice for skin care.

IPL Photorejuvenation offers clients a wide range of benefits, including:-

  • IPL treatments are non surgical and non invasive and can be used for skin rejuvenation and resurfacing.
  • IPL can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type, providing superior cosmetic results and high end satisfaction.
  • IPL is a quick in-clinic procedure, with almost zero needs for recovery. It’s easy to fit it into your schedule and get on with the rest of your life. You see great results without undergoing intensive surgery.
  • IPL works wonders for removing red splotches, brown spots, and scarring, as well as reducing pore size, eliminating and reducing wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture, smoothness and quality.
  • IPL has been used to treat rosacea, pigmentation, melasma, age and sunspots, broken capillaries, spider veins, stretch marks, and other conditions.
  • IPL is a great tool to help combat the effects of aging, and achieve a more youthful appearance.
  • IPL offers a legitimate and long-lasting solution, as opposed to some procedures which offer only short-term results.
  • IPL can also be utilised anywhere on the body, offering great versatility from a single procedure. The most common areas are the face, neck, chest and hands.

What happens during an IPL Photorejuvenation treatment?

During an IPL procedure, intense light from a range of wavelengths are focused on the specific parts of your skin that you are treating. The IPL device itself is gently pressed onto the skin, with a smooth, transparent surface emitting the light on the targeted areas. Depending on what is being treated, the exact wavelength range can be adjusted to optimise results. The light beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by either haemoglobin or melanin resulting in damage to the vessel wall or fragmenting of melanin pigment.

The IPL light encourages the production of collagen and elastin, which will help to reduce or eliminate lines and wrinkles or shallow scarring, while also reducing redness, discolouration, spots and address sun damage and general signs of aging.

The targeted haemoglobin or melanin that has been damaged during the IPL treatment is naturally removed by the body. Removal is either by natural absorption into the body where it is disposed of through the lymphatic system, or it can be forced to the skin surface where it will appear as micro-crusting which can be sloughed away when cleansing the area. It is normal for micro-crusting to appear several days after an IPL treatment and may continue to appear for up to ten (10) days.

IPL Photorejuvenation – some before and after images

*Optimal results may take 4 to 6 treatments generally 3 to 4 weeks apart
**Immediate results can be seen after each treatment but they will continue for up to 12 months as the skin produces new collagen & elastin
***Results achieved are long-lasting, however individual results may vary

During the treatment you will be required to wear an eye mask to protect your eyes and vision during the procedure, and topical gels may be applied on your skin to prevent overheating. You may also be given pain medication before or after the procedure, but you do not undergo any form of anaesthesia.

The entire procedure is very quick, taking about half an hour to complete, although the exact length will depend on what you are specifically treating, and its size or scope. Once it has been completed though, you will likely spend a very short recovery and observation period in the clinic before being allowed to go home.

“Now you can enjoy younger, more beautiful looking skin, full of health, vitality and free of scarring with a simple, safe and non-invasive IPL skin treatment”

IPL Photorejuvenation is a common cosmetic procedure designed to produce a clear, healthy and beautiful complexion. To obtain optimal* results a treatment regime almost always consists of a series of four (4) to six (6) treatments, usually with each treatment being three (3) to four (4) weeks apart.

NOTE: A Consultation and Patch Test must be performed at least 24 hours prior to receiving your initial IPL treatment.

When you visit our trained, experienced Skin Specialist to see if you are a candidate for IPL Photorejuvenation, we will undertake a thorough examination and analysis of your skin, as well as review your medical history including any recent or existing medications you are taking. The Consultation and Skin Analysis is FREE of charge.

We will also ask you to explain the problems with your skin and discuss the changes that you would like to see in your skin. We will also discuss with you the anti-ageing benefits of IPL treatments and the benefits of these treatments for specific skin conditions.

If you are a suitable candidate for this type of procedure, we will discuss the most applicable treatment for the results you would like to see and provide you with a proposed treatment plan.

If you have done any research into laser or light cosmetic treatments, you have probably come across the term “optical light”. This is a broad category that includes all treatments utilising lasers or light energy to improve the condition of skin. These procedures are becoming extremely popular around the world because they deliver the results that were once achieved only through surgical procedures.

Optical Light procedures allow us to treat skin problems or combat signs of aging in your skin without surgical incisions. This means you endure less pain during many of these procedures, and the recovery periods are substantially shorter than those required for surgical procedures.

IPL treatments are commonly referred to as “lunch time” treatments. They are completed in a short period of time, and you can typically return to your daily life immediately. While the results may not be permanent, they are often just as good as the results you would receive from going under the knife.

Most people need treatments over a period of 4-6 months, which consists of a full series of 4-6 treatments about 1 month apart. You can expect to see some improvement with each treatment, but it’s common for your response to be slightly different to each treatment. The more sun damage or redness you have, the more likely you are to need a full six treatments. Some cases of severe redness or brown spots require more than 6 treatments. Expect to see gradual clearing over time.

The answer is simple, you want to damage those skin cells to force your body to begin the process of healing and repair. The human body is remarkable in its ability to correct damage to skin cells and generate new ones to take the place of those too badly damaged to repair. Photo Rejuvenation procedures saturate specific components of your skin with damaging light heat in order to stimulate this natural process of rejuvenation.

This light helps to spur on the production of collagen, which will help to fill in lines and wrinkles or shallow scarring, while also reducing redness, discolouration, and spots.

The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue either by disposing of it through the body’s lymphatic system or forcing the damaged tissue to the surface of the skin where it appears as a micro-crust and will slough away, giving the skin a more even tone and texture, and a more youthful appearance which further improves as new skin is generated.

During any IPL treatment special protective eye-wear must be worn by both the patient and the clinician to protect the eye retina. A special cooling conductive gel will be applied to the area being treated. Topical gels may be applied on your skin to aid in the treatment.

The hand-piece has a chilled tip which cools the skin during treatment reducing any discomfort as the pulses of light are passed evenly across the skin. Whilst the hand-piece passes over the skin, despite wearing protective eye-wear and probably even having your eyes shut tightly, you may be aware of each flashing pulse of light – particularly with treatments on the face. This can feel a little disconcerting but is completely safe and you will become less aware of the flashing as the treatment continues.
Clients can, if they wish, apply anaesthetic cream thirty (30) to forty five (45) minutes prior to the IPL treatment to further reduce any minor discomfort (anaesthetic creams must be purchased from a pharmacy by the client and applied by the client before arriving for the treatment), however this is rarely necessary – the sensation of IPL is no more than being gently flicked with an elastic band and dissipates immediately, much less painful than a waxing session.

The entire procedure is very quick, taking about thirty (30) minutes to complete, although the exact length will depend on what you are specifically treating, and its size or scope.

  • Photorejuvenation – controlled pulses of light stimulate fibroblast cells that produce collagen and elastin to correct uneven skin tone and texture.
  • Vascular Therapy – pulses of light shut down any unwanted vascular lesions such as rosacea or spider veins by constricting the capillaries, which are then absorbed by the lymphatic system.
  • Pigmentation Treatment – pulses of light are used to heat and shatter superficial pigmentation such as sun damage, sun spots and freckles, causing them to microcrust on the skin surface before being sloughed off during exfoliation or naturally falling away.
  • Acne Reduction and Management – blue light is used to reduce acne causing bacteria, clear congestion in the skin and prevent future outbreaks.

Treatment for skin rejuvenation, vascular, pigmentation, acne or rosacea usually consist of a series of four (4) to eight (8) sessions performed between two (2) to six (6) weeks apart depending upon the area or condition being treated. Each treatment takes between ten (10) to thirty (30) minutes.

For the best long term results, it is imperative after your treatment to follow the post treatment advice provided by our Clinician, report any concerns promptly and avoid unfiltered direct sun exposure.

NOTE: A consultation and patch test is required a minimum of 24 hours prior to commencing any IPL treatment so that our Skin Specialist can assess your skin suitability. The consultation process aside from the treatment takes approximately thirty (30) minutes and will include a test shot (referred to as a patch test) with the IPL hand-piece in the vicinity of where treatment is required.

Our Skin Specialist will select an appropriate sapphire filter for the IPL hand-piece so that only a selected range of short blasts of a polychromatic, high-intensity light can penetrate just below the skin’s surface, targeting specific chromaphores or structures such as haemoglobin (the red colour in your blood vessels) or melanin (the dark pigment in your hair and skin), dependent upon what is being targeted and treated.

With your Skin Specialist being able to select a variety of wavelengths for your treatment, IPL can target specific issues. Because of the broad spectrum of the IPL light source they are unique, as opposed to lasers, in the ability to filter the light spectrum to target various chromophores in the skin.

IPL is similar to laser in that it delivers specifically targeted light energy to the skin. The light energy is taken up by specific parts of the skin (for example only red vessels), heating them to remove them. Lasers have only one very specific wavelength of light whereas IPL has a range of wavelengths. This is often an advantage of IPL as it can treat multiple elements (eg red vessels and brown age spots) at the same time.

IPL Systems DO NOT deliver UVA, UVB, UVC or radioactive light (like an x-ray).

  • IPL Photorejuvenation is in the range 420nm to 1200nm (nanometres) – wavelengths above UVA, UVB and UVC
  • UVA light is in the range; 400nm – 320nm;
  • UVB light 320nm – 290nm;
  • UVC light 290nm – 100nm and
  • X-rays are 1nm.

In the diagram below you can see that different wavelengths travel different distances onto the dermis and epidermis, therefore allowing us to target the area where the condition resides.  Example;-

  1. acne skin conditions are found closer to the skin surface (epidermis) and so using a filter to deliver a wavelength between 400 – 490 nm (blue light) we can concentrate the light heat energy to the epidermis area specifically.
  2. skin rejuvenation relies on cellular stimulation, collagen and elastin regeneration. To achieve this the light energy must reach deeper into the base levels of the dermis therefore we use a filter that delivers a wavelength between 570 – 590 nm to concentrate the light heat energy to that area specifically.

Treatment completed, cooling conductive gel removed from your skin and you are ready to resume your daily routine, no downtime, no inconvenience. You will have an immediate ‘healthy glow’, similar to that produced by a vigorous workout!

After your first treatment, you can expect to see some redness, darkening of brown spots, and light swelling. These symptoms will resolve in several hours to one week. Makeup can be immediately applied, if desired – we recommend a quality mineral makeup. After the treatment, your skin will feel smoother and have a more even tone. A gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing, age spots, and fine lines will be more visible after each treatment.

For IPL treatments addressing veins, rosacea, broken capillaries or acne, generally the skin looks slightly redder after the treatment for two to five days. Makeup can be used starting right after the treatment, as long as it is applied and removed very gently. Rarely, there is bruising, which can take 1-2 weeks to resolve.

For IPL treatments addressing sun damage, freckles and age spots, pigmentation, wrinkles and lines,  the skin (particularly pigmented spots) generally look darker for 3-7 days. Crusting can occur, which may last up to ten days. The lesions will then begin to clear and will generally be resolving at one month. It is usual to take an average of 3-5 treatments to clear age spots and more treatments for severe sun damage and scars.

Over the next week or so post your IPL treatment, brown spots and pigmented areas will turn darker and/or appear more obvious as the body breaks down the melanin that has been released. The melanin may rise to the surface of the skin and appear as micro-crusting or a slight scabbing. This micro-crusting may be gently sloughed off in a warm shower using a gentle loofah or similar.

The real results become evident after two (2) weeks when you will visibly notice a reduction in pigmentation and improvement in overall skin tone.

Cooling gels such as refrigerated Aloe Vera gel or ice packs can be used if desired but are generally unnecessary. Clients are advised not to pluck or tweezer hairs from the treated area. Hairs within the treatment area should be allowed to shed naturally from within the follicle. Light shaving is permitted.

With IPL Skin Rejuvenation, pigmentation and vascular treatments, the redder or more pigmented your skin is to begin with, the more dramatic the change in your skin will be, both in the short and long term. It is quite normal for skin to appear redder for the first few days, and any pre-existing freckles or age spots will initially darken and take approx three (3) to seven (7) days to micro-crust or shed.

With IPL Rosacea treatments, as it is a skin condition and not a bacteria like acne, it is not unexpected that the redness subject of your complaint will disappear almost immediately. The skin will again feel tight and a warmness similar to a slight sunburn is usual. Ice packs and/or refrigerated Aloe Vera gel will calm any heat sensation which should last only one (1) day at most.

For the first five (5) days post any IPL skin treatment you should avoid using any active products (such as vitamin A or acid based products) you might have been previously applying.

Mineral makeup can be applied – gently – if required.

For all IPL treatmentsexposure to the sun for long periods (10+ mins constant), for a total of four (4) weeks before and four (4) weeks after any IPL treatment must be avoided

Clients are advised to apply at least a 30+ SPF sunscreen if risking any sun exposure. Recent sun exposure or tanning may prevent our Clinician from administering IPL treatments to you and unprotected sun exposure after your treatments can place your skin at risk.

IPL skin treatments encourage your body to produce new collagen and elastin, effectively promoting a new surface skin layer….think of your new skin as that of a newly born baby, would you allow your newly born child to sit out in the sun without protection?

For the best long term results, it is imperative after your treatment to follow the post treatment advice provided by our Clinician, report any concerns promptly and avoid unfiltered direct sun exposure.

When We Cannot Treat You
IPL is NOT a suitable treatment for you if;-
  • you are pregnant or have very dark skin (Fitzpatrick Type IV and above)
  • you have taken oral Roaccutance (acne medication or similar) in the past six months
  • you have a history of active infections, severe eczema, and/or seizures, you may NOT be suitable for IPL treatments
  • you have experienced sunburn recently, have had exposure to the sun or have a fake tan (tanning beds / solariums) in the area to be treated, you may have to postpone your IPL Photorejuvenation treatment until the burn has subsided.

Following these Pre-treatment instructions closely will optimise your treatment results with the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

  • Use a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 daily. Skin that is suffering sunburn cannot be treated until the sunburn has subsided.
  • Avoid any irritants to your face, such as any products containing hydroquinone, bleaching creams, Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents or chemical peels for at least two (2) weeks.
  • If you have a history of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) with IPL, laser treatments or other trauma, please inform our Skin Specialist, so we may prescribe a lightening agent prior to the procedure to reduce this reaction.
  • Do not use self-tanning agents for at least two (2) weeks prior to treatment. If you have used these products, thoroughly cleanse the area with abrasive / exfoliating scrub to remove all product two (2 ) weeks prior to any treatment and do not apply any further products.
  • Shave the area to be treated one (1) day prior to your appointment if necessary – ie back, chest, arms etc (do not shave if you are having an IPL Permanent Hair Reduction treatment)
  • Please do not wear any makeup, perfume, or lotions in the treatment area on the day of your treatment. This includes antiperspirants and deodorants
  • Before each treatment, please inform us if you are taking any new antibiotics or medications since your consultation, as they may make your skin sensitive to light treatments, and therefore, we may not be able to treat you for one (1) or two (2) weeks after completion of the antibiotic. This applies to both Skin and Hair IPL treatments.

For Permanent Hair Reduction treatments;-

  • Do not pluck or wax for at least one (1) month prior to your first treatment, continuing through the course of your treatments. Plucking / waxing removes the hair being targeted in the treatment.
  • Do not bleach or use “Nair”- type products for two (2) weeks prior to treatment, as this can irritate the skin.

Following these Post-treatment instructions closely will optimise your treatment results with the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

  • Immediately after the Intense Pulsed Light treatment, there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site, which will last from two (2) hours up to a few days. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours. You may use a cold compress, aloe vera gel, or 1% hydrocortisone if needed. If treating the face, please continue using sun protectant with SPF 30+ daily for the entire treatment period.
  • Do not pick, as scabbing could lead to scarring.
  • Make-up may be used after the treatment if there is no extended redness, blistering, or scabbing. Make sure that you have moisturiser on under your makeup; use moisturiser or an aloe vera gel frequently on the treated area.
  • Avoid sun exposure for four (4) to six (6) weeks after the treatment to reduce the chance of dark and light spots. Use sun protectant SPF 30 or greater with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide at all times throughout the course of treatment. Even waterproof sun block is good for only 80 minutes, so re-apply hourly.
  • Do not use any other forms of hair removal methods (tweezing, waxing, depilatories) or products on the treated area during the course of the laser treatment, as it will prevent you from achieving your best results. You may shave the area if needed.
  • Until initial skin irritation subsides, avoid hot water and anything irritating to the skin. Advil or Ibuprofins can be helpful.
  • Avoid any irritants to your face, such as any products containing Retin-A (tretinoin), retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic / salicylic acids, astringents or chemical peels for at least two(2) days.
  • Do not wear tight, constricting clothing in the treated area as irritation can occur and skin cannot cool properly.
  • Do not exercise, receive any body treatments, take hot showers, or use saunas or hot tubs until skin is back to normal (2-3 days).
  • Hypopigmentation (lightening) or hyperpigmentation may occur with any IPL treatments, and usually resolves within four (4) to six (6) weeks.

For Permanent Hair Reduction treatment post care;-

  • Anywhere from five (5) to fourteen (14) days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can help the hairs exfoliate by taking a warm shower and rubbing with a washcloth or loofah sponge.
  • **Contact our clinic or a general practitioner as soon as possible if you develop any signs of infection (pus, tenderness, fever)
IPL is NOT recommended during pregnancy.

Please advise our Skin Specialist if you are pregnant, attempting to conceive or lactating / breast feeding.

*DISCLAIMER: Results may vary from person to person. Whilst we have seen amazing results from IPL for a range of skin concerns, please know that results from IPL vary and we cannot make guarantees. We recommend speaking to our Skin Specialist for an in-depth consultation. They will discuss in detail how IPL works, whether it will be right for your skin type and the expected results in line with your skin and beauty goals.
